Malaysian Grand Prix Qualifying

March 22nd, 2008

Malaysian qualifying didn’t seem as interesting as Australia’s and felt a bit more like the usual parade, but still provided a few surprises.

Trulli performed very well throughout, although I doubt it will continue into the race as he is known for being able to do a single quick lap like that. Kubica and Glock also did well and I look forward to what they can do in the race.

Ferrari are definitely quicker than McLaren here, although I expect there could be some reliability issues again. Malaysia is a hot race and there simply won’t have been enough time to fix the overheating issues they suffered in Melbourne. Kovalainen did a pretty good job, but Hamilton seemed a bit off today. He was having some oversteer problems through some corners and is probably on a heavier fuel load than his team-mate, like Raikkonen.

McLaren have been penalised for blocking Heidfeld though, so start further back than they qualified. I can’t disagree with the penalty, but I think the others who were also creeping on that lap should at least have been given a warning not to do it again. All but Heidfeld and Alonso had finished their laps early and started creeping around as if the round was completely over. The McLarens were the only two on the racing line, but the others weren’t exactly miles from it either and were still going too slow considering the round hadn’t finished.

It should be an interesting race, especially if the expected rain arrives. It would be the first wet race without traction control and I’m pretty sure all hell will break loose if it is.
